I Am…Who I am
When you go off to do whatever it is you’re going to do, you leave home for school, for work, for love, do you think about what this means for you, how it might change you? Or do you simply cast yourself off and know that all will be well, without giving it too much thought?
I’m not certain there’s a right or wrong approach when you launch, but if you do choose to think about what a change will mean for you and who you are, how do you go about planning for it? Do you consider every eventuality, maybe you chart out a step-by-step plan? Whatever you choose to do, or not do, it’s probably not a waste of time to give it some thought.
For me, heading off to university could have meant I would be someone different, even represent myself in a different way. This all sounds good and well, but the fact of the matter is, remaining my true self is really what’s most prudent. You’ve taken time to get here, so pay homage to it. Build on that. Grow YOU in ways that challenge your comfort level.
After all, this is where the good stuff lives. The good feelings, the sense of accomplishment, the excitement for the next time around. I have chosen to be me, it’s really what makes the most sense. But remember, it is ok to be confused and question who we are or who we want to be.
I think that is good. And the change and opportunity that university presents to you makes it as good a time as ever. Search for the people that will help you be the best version of you, the one YOU want to be. You will know who they are when you find them. Recognize the things that make you happy at each new chapter and bring those empowering friends along, as they will help ease through these sometimes-challenging transitions.
Lastly, keep this in mind when you decide to make a move. It is always better to be running toward something rather than running away from something. Find that thing that makes you want to run to it.
