I am One of them
When I was younger, I would look up at those older kids and think to myself, I will never be that big, that smart, that fill in the blank. Was that you too?
I am not sure if everyone had the same feelings I had, but I am curious. If you did, what does that mean? Anyhow, I have grown up to be one of them, bigger, stronger, wiser, confident.
And now that I am on this side of the equation, the older student, the more mature athlete, the young adult, etc., I am cognizant of this reality. Because of the way I looked up to those older kids, I am aware of my influence, my actions, how the way I react to situations has an impact on others.
The bigger question here is this. Can a person be aware of their position, visibility, and their influence and still be themselves? I would argue yes; it is possible to be true to yourself and at the same time, be conscious of the greater effect. It does take a concerted effort however, to remain true to you. It’s worth it.
You might find that is actually takes more energy to be someone else. I have chosen to accept that it matters to be a good and decent role model for those that may be watching, and to be me.
